What a refreshing comic book revival. This is the film that you see if you don’t read any comic books, but enjoy the films. And from what I’ve been told, it stayed very true to the story, which really sets the premise to more in the Superman series.
As the planet Krypton faces destruction, Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife Lara (Aylet Zurer) launch their natural-born son Kal-El into space to earth for a better life. Though they fear he might be an outcast, he will be alive and safe from General Zod (Michael Shannon). On earth, Kal-El, given the name Clark Kent by his adoptive parents Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane), has trouble growing up. As a young teen, he’s forced to keep his superstrength a secret, so not to worry people.
Fast forward to Kent (Henry Cavill) in his late 20s, early 30s and he’s on a mission to find out about his past, where he’s from and who his true parents are. Meanwhile, an eager Daily Planet reporter, Lois Lane (Amy Adams), who thinks she’s onto something big, does some digging of her own and ends up on the same spaceship in the Artic. While Kent finds out where he’s originally from, Lane is injured. He heals her and then disappears, as he usually does. Lane tries to get her story published, but her editor at the Planet won’t do it. She ends up leaking the story anyway. However, after she does more research on Kent and meets him, she wants to retract the story.
Soon though, Zod has found a way to infiltrate earth’s airwaves. As his ship penetrates the earth’s atmosphere, he puts out a warning to humans that if they don’t turn over the alien, Kent, then he will destroy earth. The military hunts down Lane to find out Kent’s whereabouts, but Kent turns himself in, despite not trusting Zod. Kent and Lois are ‘captured’ and brought on Zod’s ship where they learn about Zod’s true mission, to destroy earth’s population and turn it into a new Krypton.
After many battle scenes, which essentially destroy several cities due to the strength of Zod and Kent, justice prevails and Zod is defeated. And though the military is slightly leery of Kent, he tells officials to trust that he is the good guy.
In the end, which leaves the Superman series open for many more films, Kent gets a job at the Daily Planet, with only Lane knowing his true identity.
I loved everything about this film. I loved the story, I loved the relationship with Kent and Lane, I loved the battle scenes, I loved the backstory of Superman and his family. I loved the acting. Costner was an amazing Jonathan Kent all the way through to his death. Cavill was almost a Christopher Reeve. I’ve heard this is the Superman film that fans across the board will enjoy. And as stated above, those who don’t know the story but want to need to see this film immediately. I’ve heard the 3D is OK, so you might want to spend a little extra for those fun battle scenes too. Once again, another great summer blockbuster.
Imagine all your favorite funny celebrities die in the apocalypse, and the few that remain try to survive in James Franco’s mansion. Madness ensues which will keep you laughing until the credits roll.
In the year 2022, under a new government, every year for 12 hours all criminal activity is legal. Find out what happens to one suburban family when they start to question whether they actually agree with The Purge.
One thousand years into the future, earth is an abandoned planet. Gen. Cypher and his son crash land there and are forced to survive not only the elements and alien creatures, but each other.
The crew gets sidetracked as they head to Arizona to drop Alan off at a treatment center. Throw in a few murders, a beheaded giraffe and a naked Chow and that’s it in a nutshell.
In the summer of franchises, this sixth installment of the Fast series picks up where the last left off. The gang is still wanted in the U.S. and living free in Spain. Soon, they are mixed up with not only the feds, but a mastermind terrorist.
