If you live in the Mineola area in Nassau County and are looking for some place new to try out, head on down to Your Mother’s House. This cleverly named kitchen and bar is the perfect way to start or end your weekend, or even just to check out a game during the week.
It is located on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park across from Staples, where Charlie Brown’s used to be. The new owners gutted the restaurant and turned it into a sports bar. But the food is not only moderately priced, but it is fantastic home cooking, just like mom used to make.
The appetizers range from nachos, dips and chili to pretzels, wings and mussels. Entrees include everything from meatloaf, turkey, barbecue chicken, snow crab legs and much more. For those on a low-calorie diet, the salads are plentiful. The sides are all homestyle favorites, including mac and cheese and garlic roasted mashed potatoes. The menu also includes burgers, sandwiches and pizza. Desserts are all homemade and range from cheesecake to a fresh chocolate chip cookie sundae.
We went on a Sunday night. What drew me to this place was the wide range of menu. I prefer the homestyle dishes, while my boyfriend prefers the seafood. As we walked in, we were promptly seated at a table near the bar and right in the middle of the at least 30 televisions with every football game on. The hostess told us the specials and the waitress was over with drink suggestions. While I ordered an Oktoberfest, I ended up with the pumpkin ale, as they were out. However, it was a delish choice. For appetizers, my boyfriend had the fresh chili, while I stuck with a side salad. Both very good. For entrees, I ordered the turkey dinner, which came with stuffing, cranberry chutney and fresh mashed potatoes and gravy. He ordered the sterling steampot, which included snow crab legs, mussels, lobster tail, garlic shrimp and corn on the cob.
The turkey dinner was one of the best I’ve had at a restaurant. The turkey was moist, the gravy not overwhelming and the stuffing sweet. The mashed potatoes were not instant and flavored perfectly. The steampot, which was also recommended by the server, was one of the best he’s ever had. At first, he seemed unimpressed with the crab legs, and then he had the lobster tail, and his eyes lit up, stating, ‘This is one of the best lobster tails I’ve had, hands down.’
After clearing our plates, literally, we decided against dessert, as we were full. But as we discussed it, our server came over with two large pieces of cheesecake, informing us they were on the house. One was regular cheesecake, the other was a pumpkin spice. Now, I am not a cheesecake person, however, if it’s free, I figured now was as good as time as any to try it. It was delicious. The pumpkin spice one tasted more like an apple pie, while the regular one was creamy with a strawberry sauce. But, when I say they were huge, they were. We couldn’t even finish one, so the server happily wrapped them up to go. We were informed that the cheesecakes are made fresh daily. And we could tell. That was definitely a nice touch to a really great dinner.
And the best part, was all that food and deliciousness cost us the same amount as if we were go to an Applebees or Chilis, but it was 10 times better. If you’re in the area, check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
What’s also great is this place has takeout, so if you don’t feel like sitting in a restaurant or bar during the game, you can just order it to go and eat it at, well, maybe your mother’s house.

I took these four classes with Joe Gelsomino at the Lucille Roberts in Plainview. It was so great I signed up for more torture, er, I mean, personal training with him!
It really is nice to know that there are people out there who truly enjoy their jobs. My hairdresser Christine Adkins is one of those people who is living out her dream, specifically when she opened her own salon, Textures, two years ago. Read why she is amazing.
