Episode 5: Burn, Witch. Burn! (Aired Nov. 6, 2013)
Was very pleased with this episode. It is moving the series along nicely, with showcasing not only Zoe’s powers, but also more of Fiona’s. It also shows a softer side of Fiona, which we haven’t seen yet. And there was no more of that Frankenstein plot, though I’m sure it will come back at some point, since he ran away in the previous episode.
Back in the 1800s, we learn that Madame LaLaurie imprisoned her daughters after hearing they wanted to try and kill her. Back in present day, those dead daughters are the ones banging on the school’s front door when Marie Laveau’s army of the dead comes to attack the witches. The girls’ stupid neighbor thinks its some Halloween prank, so he goes out on the front lawn to ‘scare’ them away, only to be b attacked. Nan heads outside, instead of to a higher floor in the house. She gets as far as a car with the guy before the car is overtaken by the dead. Zoe distracts them so Nan can escape, only to get chased herself. She eventually finds a chainsaw and just goes to town on the dead. However, with one guy left and a broken chainsaw, Zoe discovers a power she never knew she had. Back inside, one of LaLaurie’s daughters comes after her and Queenie. LaLaurie, after a weird apology, eventually kills her dead daughter to save Queenie.
Meanwhile, Fiona takes Cordelia to the hospital after someone threw acid on her face. In a drug-induced stupor, Fiona stumbles around the hospital in a daze, feeling guilty for what happened to Cordelia. In a rare moment, Fiona finds a woman who gave birth to a stillborn. She places the dead baby in the woman’s arms and brings the infant back to life. Back in the room, Cordelia’s husband rushes to her bedside. However, when he touches her hand, she wakes up and sees all that he has been up to. Not good.
Later on at the house, Fiona is ‘under trial’ again by the council, especially after the attack on Cordelia. Evidence points to Myrtle in the attack, and Fiona sentences Myrtle to death by burning. We later find out that Fiona asked Queenie to use her power to make Myrtle guilty. Of course, after her burned body is left to the birds, our favorite crazy witch Misty Day comes to the rescue.
This episode opened up a lot of possibilities, especially who the next supreme is. It’s probably going to be Zoe, because Cordelia is too obvious, but who knows, because they both used powers they didn’t know they had this time. Zoe essentially broke the spell of Marie, which scared the crap out of Marie, making her even more pissed off than she already is. The funny part is, Fiona doesn’t even know about how Zoe stopped the dead. I wonder if Myrtle and Misty will join Marie, since they hate Fiona. I feel like the end of the season will see the end of Fiona. But who knows.
Once again, I can’t wait for the next episode. As I mentioned I’m glad they didn’t do anything with the Kyle/Frankenstein plot. While I’ll be annoyed if they don’t wrap it up, I won’t be disappointed because it’s a stupid storyline. I still think it’s a waste of a good actor in Evan Peters, but whatever.
