Episode 13: The Seven Wonders (Aired Jan. 29, 2014)

As expected, all of the loose ends were tied up in the season finale of American Horror Story’s third installment. And I really like the way it ended. Though I still don’t get the purpose of Franken-Kyle, but nothing is perfect.

Fresh off of Fiona’s death, Queenie, Zoe, Madison and Misty prepare to perform the Seven Wonders. Misty is the only one who doesn’t seem confident in herself though, which costs her. During the transition to the underworld, she doesn’t make it out in time and gets lost on the other side forever, much to the disappointment of Cordelia, who was rooting for her.  However, Madison is ecstatic that her competition has been eliminated for real this time.

During the transmutation test, the girls start to have a little fun outside, but the fun ends when Zoe winds up impaled on the fence. Madison refuses to bring her back to life, fearing that Zoe might be the next Supreme. When Queenie tries to bring her back, she can’t, thus ruling her out as the next Supreme.

At this point, refusing to believe that Madison is the next Supreme, Myrtle suggests that Cordelia perform the Seven Wonders, convinced that she can do it and arise as the coven’s new leader. As she performs each one, Madison starts to worry and jumps back in the game. She fails during divination, prompting her to leave the coven and threaten to expose the witches. Franken-Kyle, distraught over Zoe’s death, follows up to her room and kills her.  The ghost of our favorite crazy butler comes to clean up the mess, and it seems trains Kyle to be the next butler.

Once Cordelia performs Vitalum Vitalis on Zoe, bringing her back to life, she rises as the next Supreme. She gets her sight back and gets even stronger as a witch. She decides to go public with the coven, hoping that more young witches will seek her help. She assigns Queenie and Zoe as her right-hand women on the witches’ council. And much to her dismay, she orders the burning of Myrtle for the dead of some of the council’s witches, at Myrtle’s insistence, as she doesn’t want any more scandals in the coven.

As young witches line up around the block to get into the coven, Cordelia has one last piece of business to attend to. She finally frees Fiona, as she had faked her own death in order to find out who the next Supreme is. Fiona begs Cordelia to kill her and put her out of her misery, however, she dies on her own and ends up in her own personal hell, country life with the Ax Man, something she’s convinced Cordelia set up for her. Either way, what a great ending.

With her two witches by her side, and Kyle as the new butler, Cordelia seems to be taking to her new role with the confidence she didn’t have before.

I have to say, I really liked the way this season shaped up to be. I had my reservations mid-way through. The little tangent storylines, Nan with the neighbor and Zoe with her killer vagina (no mention of that anymore), did get on my nerves, but not enough to make me abandon ship. I was confident things would get tied up nicely, and I wasn’t disappointed. I really like that Cordelia is the next Supreme. She had me worried in the beginning, beaten down by Fiona’s harsh words that she wasn’t good enough. But Myrtle really brought her back up and gave her confidence she needed. Plus, it takes one dedicated woman to gouge her own eyes out to save herself and others. It worked and in the end she got her sight back and even more awesome powers.
