Episode 10: The Name Game (Aired Jan. 2, 2013)

*Spoiler Alert*

Wow. Talk about coming back with a great episode. It picks up where it left off with Dr. Arden bringing back Kit after their experiment to attract the aliens. Dr. Arden lies to Kit and says it didn’t work. Meanwhile, Arden tries to figure out how Grace is alive now and full term, ready to give birth. Our favorite patient Pepper explains that he is not to touch her, as ‘they’ will not allow it. She also tells him ‘they’ made her Grace’s keeper to ensure her safety and the baby’s. After trying unsuccessfully to figure out whether it is, in fact, a child or alien inside Grace, he gives up.

Over on the other side of the asylum, Sister Mary is taking care of the Monsignor, who we last saw hanging from a cross in the chapel with our Black Angel visiting him. Turns out, she alerted him to the devil inside Sister Mary and instructed him to save her. After attempting to do the work with God’s help, he falls helpless as Sister Mary/the Devil take away his virtue in a pretty disturbing scene. He then seeks Judy Martin (Sister Jude’s) help. And even though her mind is gone after electro-shock therapy, he tells him to kill her. Later on, after another confrontation, he throws her from the third floor staircase, and in her death, she is finally at peace and released from the devil.

Out in the yard, Dr. Arden brings out his experiments and kills them in front of Sister Mary (before her death), whom he saw deflowering the monsignor. He attempts to kill himself too, but can’t.  Again, later on, he informs the monsignor that he will cremate her body, as it is tainted with the devil now. And in perhaps the second biggest shocker of the season, Arden climbs on top of Sister Mary as her body enters the incinerator, where he is burned alive.

And in our Bloody Face storyline, we learn Sister Mary hired Dr. Thredson full time at the asylum, where he informs Kit and Lana that he will finish out ‘his work’ with the two of them. As he is wandering in Dr. Arden’s lab, he stumbles upon Grace giving birth. He uses the child (or alien baby) as a bribe to get Kit to tell him where the taped confession is. Kit breaks down, but Lana is one step ahead of Thredson and lets him know that she has the confession and will keep it for as long as she needs, probably until she either kills him or sends him to prison. I’m sure she would rather the former.

Lastly, Jessica Lange does a fantastic job of playing crazy, as after Jude’s electro-shock therapy, her mind is gone. So gone, she imagines singing ‘The Name Game’ with all of the patients. And while I wasn’t a huge fan of this little dance sequence (hence the 3 star rating), it was homage to the 70s music and essentially showed just how fried her brain was at the time. And even in her mind-frame and her rambling, she does manage to tell Mother Superior that she needs to get Lana Winters out, essentially so she can expose the entire system.

The previews didn’t really show much for next week, so I’m pretty pumped to see where the last three episodes will go. With Sister Mary and Dr. Arden gone, we really just have Bloody Face to focus on, so I’m curious to see how that will play out, especially with Lana carrying his baby. And I really want to know what the hell kind of baby Grace had, and why is Pepper talking all of a sudden? Why did the aliens pick her? Because she’s funny looking perhaps, as she explained in a rant to Dr. Arden. I really hope we have more shockers in the final episodes, because that’s really what AHS is all about.
